I am new to testing have heard many people saying writing test is almost worthless as they catch very little bugs. I have codebases and tutorials where they basically check if text is rendering in component or click is working are this the only test we are suppose to write am I learning from wrong people?

I would suggest unit-testing + e2e testing
but unit tests are required - okay yeah they catch very little bugs because the purpose of unit tests is to test individual functions or components in isolation
let's assume we don't have unit tests but only e2e tests or integration tests etc
they might fail due to that silly little bugs
