How Can I Handle Connections to MQTT Broker Safely?

Hello everyone!
I'm working in a project that currently requires to create a connection to a MQTT Broker to receive events in real-time. My first thought was to create the connection and handling it in on the client-side.
I did a proof of concept and works great. But I don't know if handling the connection like this would result in exposing, for example, the url or the password to connect to the MQTT Broker.
The url and password are being managed as NEXT_PUBLIC env variables and as far I know, that's not safe at all.
What can I do?
I don't expect a full solution to my problem, but some recomendations/good practices.
Thanks you all in advance.
