Should you use intercepting routes for an authentication modal?

Is it a good or a bad idea? Especially when trying to replicate exactly what Airbnb has, one modal for login and register, except they don't do intercepting routes.

I think not. UX wise it makes no sense. If the user is on product listing, and clicks the product, they get to see the product URL, and if they "like" the product, but need to sign up, url will change, they refresh or something happens and they end up on sign in page, which is more annoying than if they ended up on the product page, because at elast they would never lose the product, so now they need to go back instead of just clicking login again.
I think intercepting routes are meant to be used only for things that could also be a page, like a product page or alike, not auth
